Straight out of the London borough of Hackney, Sir Smurf Lil’ is a visionary lyricist with a distinctive voice and flow.
The self-styled ‘Murder Mile Ghetto Graduate’ was first introduced to the UK scene through open mic sessions as a founding member of London crew The Colony, alongside Conspicuous The Coroner, Grimlok and Willo The Wispa. The collective achieved Single Of The Month in HHC magazine with their first white label release in 2002 and have since gone on to release countless solo projects and mixtapes, including ‘Bootprints and Fistmarks’ a collaboration with New York’s Strong Hold Clique.
Smurf dropped his debut solo release ‘Outside’ b/w ‘City Night Life’ on YNR in 2005, the lead single from the ‘Myalpha’ album released the following year. Critics quickly picked up on Smurfs “really incredible lyrics” (DJ Magazine) and his “knack for keeping wordplay unpredictable and pretty damn refreshing” (Undercover). With guest verses left, right and centre, a nationwide tour, as well as radio appearances for the likes of Giles Peterson (Radio1) DJ MK (KissFM) and Dan Greenpeace (XFM) Smurf’s profile as a solo artist soon began to grow.
In 2008 Smurf followed up ‘Myalpha’ with the highly-acclaimed ‘A New Bloodline’. With a range of production sounds and off-kilter subject matter ‘A New Bloodline’ certainly struck a chord with fans and critics alike, a rude awakening for those foolish enough to sleep the first time around! HHC magazine not only awarded the release ‘Album Of The Month’ status, but went on to place it at No. 7 in their ‘Albums Of The Year’ chart in the months to follow.
