Albert Martey, better known within the U.K hip-hop scene as Mr.Drastick, is a lyricist hailing from North West London, a stones throw away from The London Coliseum (Wembley Stadium). Raised by his Ghanaian mother between Ghana and London, he realised his love for hip-hop at the tender age of 7. Thereby taking inspiration from U.S. artistes, such as Lords Of The Underground, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, De La Soul, Tupac, Slick Rick, and many others around the time of his growing love for Hip-Hop. Not knowing how music was recorded, Mr. Drastick would emulate his favorite artists, by recording his raps on tape, through a microphone on his mother’s Hi-fi system. This he did, until he was introduced to a real life studio environment by his older brother, thus learning and studying his craft.
Fast forward 14 years on – ‘Mr. Drastick is currently in the studio recording ‘The Gladiatorial Passion Vol. 2”, which is now recognised as one of the most eagerly anticipated mix-tapes/artists in the U.K, to touch the microphone. Taking an instrumental and turning them into works of art, he has featured on many a mix-tape. i.e.: ‘Welcome to London vol.1’, which included U.K heavyweights such as Klashnekoff & Jehst.
Encouraged by the positive feed back received from fans, Mr. Drastick began to perform at as many shows and open mic events, including, The Hard Rock Café, Main Aim Talent Showcase, and U.K Unsigned, just to name a few. He reached the final in the finals.
After slowly raising his profile, Mr. Drastick felt it was time to unleash his first independently released CD – ‘The Gladiatorial Passion vol.1’ mix-tape, which included artists such as: Doc Brown and the Poisonous Poets. Released June 14th 2005, on his birth date, it shifted over 10,000 copies through selling them on the streets of London, Birmingham, Manchester, and various other U.K cities. It became mix-tape of the week on Dev’s mix-tape review show on BBC 1Xtra, and single of the week for the song ‘They Swear’, on DJ G. Money’s show (BBC 1Xtra), just one week after its release. He was also bestowed with the ‘U.K mix-tape king’ title on Spit TV Sky channel 360 That was early 2006, three weeks before the video for the single had even been shown on Channel U.
With his future career plans in the pipeline, which include the setting up of a record label, and a group project to be released later on in the year, Mr. Drastick is very busy at work. The project shall include partners in rhyme, Verbal and Pharaoh Biggs. It will also be executive produced by Mr. Drastick, adding to his long list of talents. Thus keeping his fans occupied before the release of his first nationally released album.
