In the rap mecca of Detroit, artists make their names and rhymes known on the street. In this urban city, kids are caught in the grip of economic turmoil and must do whatever it takes to survive. There is little hope of a different life. Yet, with that hopelessness, comes a freedom. You can bet it all because there is nothing to lose.

Picture KINFUSION, a rap duo out of Detroit, turned to music as a way to survive. Their name is a reference to their relationship as cousins as well as to the confusion that surrounds them. James :Flip” Griffin could have been caught up in the drama of life on the street but he followed another path. He had always dreamed of rapping for a living and had been writing songs since he was 16. Now, at 20, he is seeing his dreams turn into reality. Lake “Dolla” Bates has a good two years in his cousin, Flip. Streetwise and directed, Dolla says his name emphasizes his focus on the green bottom line. The two’s straightforward, no bullshit attitude is what got them noticed.

They started rapping together in high school; chillin’ and bustin’ rhymes. Like other rappers on the Detroit scene, they relied on exposure through the many clubs and house parties. Through word of mouth, their popularity grew. Flip and Dolla realized they were good; there was hope. There was only one problem: They didn’t have any tracks recorded. They contacted a well-known local producer, Art Forest, and went into his home studio to create a three-song demo.

How did they get to Touchwood Records? “By Greyhound,” Dolla states succinctly. It’s as simple as that. They had mailed demos and got tired of waiting for a response. So, after scoping out record label addresses in one of those “How to Break Into the Record Business” manuals, they hopped a Greyhound armed with 50 copies of their demo in a knapsack and headed for NYC.
The two went door to door to the companies on their list. While wandering the halls of 1650 Broadway, a renowned music industry building, they met a Touchwood Records representative. KINFUSION handed over their demo and soon headed back to Detroit. Upon arrival home, they were greeted with a message from Touchwood Records calling them back to the Big Apple. Within two weeks, they were signed to Before Dawn , LLC, a subsidiary of Touchwood Records. The tape that they had presented included “Crooked Green Papers,” a song with hypnotic grooves and an unforgettable background singer whose voice bears a striking resemblance to the smooth, sexy sounds of Barry White. The track is all about living life on the take, ill gotten gains and doing whatever it takes to survive. This hip-hop song clearly had something different in its fusion of old school flava/R&B rhythm with street wise savvy. “Crooked Green Papers” is slated for an August 1997 release as KINFUSION’s first single.

KINFUSION created the concept and wrote their debut record themselves, from the lyrics to the beats. It features similar sounds to the West Coast rap vibe – like the Dogg Pound or Warren G. – with its lazy beats and vivid accounts of life on the street minus the aggression and anger. They just tell it like it is. Their style is more laid back than the hardcore gangsta rap that is going on today. While their music is also about reality, living day-to-day anyway they can, they temper that reality with an element of fun.
With nothing to lose and everything to gain, KINFUSION is betting it all on the music and the message – the proverbial ace up their sleeve.
