If you consider yourself a major expert on the history of rap but haven’t heard of the Dosta Crew, don’t be surprised. The interracial pop-rap quartet never became well-known, although it did have a small following in its native Georgia in the early ’90s. Those who did hear All Together realized that it wasn’t recorded with hip-hop’s hardcore in mind – Dosta favors a commercial approach to rap, and the group likes its rap laced with a lot of R&B, pop or Latin freestyle. All Together was aimed at the type of pop and dance music fans that were digging Marky Mark, MC Hammer and Gerardo at the time, but unlike their output, this CD sounds like it was recorded on a low budget. None of the material is very well produced, and Dosta’s members aren’t great rappers. Occasionally, they come up with something that’s kind of catchy (most notably, “Koko’s Kandy Shop” and “Daddy’s Girl”). But most of Dosta’s songs are quite forgettable. One shouldn’t pass on this album because it’s commercial – one should pass because it’s weak and generic.
