Conway – Reject 2 (WEB) (2015) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

The second mixtape Conway released under Griselda Records. While other group members like Benny the Butcher were still searching for their signature sound at the time, Conway already knew what he does best—grimy coke raps over cold-blooded boom bap beats. Granted, Conway has always been an artist I really enjoy, but never one that I love, contrary to the other two Griselda emcees. However, when he’s on, he’s fucking on. His highest peaks and greatest tracks can go head-to-head with anyone in the trio.

Are any of those peaks featured on Reject 2? Well, I’d say there’s one in particular that deserves a mention: Beloved. Addictive trumpet loop with superbly rugged drums to match. Everyone drops an equally great verse; Mach Hommy comes through with one of his best features, Conway holds his own remarkably well, and Benny proving to be one of the best feature artists of this generation per usual. Amazing shit, really.

That track aside, there’s plenty of superb material in addition. 1000 Corpses features great mid-tempo boom bap production, with a lovely guitar riff to match. The fact that it’s slightly off-pace with the drums only enhances it, if anything. Blakk Tape follows, which is my personal favorite on here. Manages to have a jazzy feel while also being gloomy and ill-lit at the same time. Conway’s delivery matches the tone extremely well. Sky Joint is one of three tracks featuring Westside Gunn on here, and this time they bring Skyzoo along, who steals the show here. His vocal presence fits the jazzy elements of the production perfectly, with arguably the best lyrical performance on the project as well.

Wraith-Ful and Salute Me were good additions to the album as well. A couple skips here and there, which isn’t a good look for an album of only 10 tracks. Regardless, it’s essential Griselda by all means. Not bad if you’re looking for a starting point to check out the trio.
