“Afro-Disco Makossa” by Adrian Younge is released on Linear Labs as an LP and brings together concise, danceoriented compositions that weave disco, funk, Afrobeat, and Makossa into a cohesive whole. The project is conceived as a direct reach for the dance floor, relying on analog recording processes and punchy bass and horn arrangements that connect classic club structures with African rhythms. Adrian Younge approaches the material from the perspective of a composer and producer: he wrote, produced, mixed, and recorded many parts himself at his Linear Labs studio, incorporating voices from Ghana and the United States alongside a larger horn and rhythm section. Stylistically, the record draws on Younge’s characteristic orchestration while remaining firmly focused on groove and repetitive motifs. Contributing musicians include, among others, drummer Philip Andy Biney, an ensemble of trumpet and saxophone players, and several guest vocalists; mastering was handled by Dave Cooley. This lineup and the analog production technique emphasize a crafted density and DJfriendly intersections between arrangement and danceability. The release on Linear Labs underscores Younge’s ongoing work on a contemporary orchestral sound for the club context.
