The Godfather Don unreleased tracks release that started it all.

To follow up the “success” of our first vinyl release meant that we had to make sure we came just as strong on the second. Initial ideas and thoughts were thrown around and we chased up various leads, before deciding to pursue one particular one.

As three fans of Godfather Don’s work, when we were offered a possible lead to track him down we all agreed it would be worth the effort.

We knew of tape-only cuts that he had produced for “The Stretch Armstrong / Bobbito Show” on WKCR 89.9 FM, that Bobbito hat played on air – sure, some people had them taped from these shows, but that was as far as it went.
After speaking to Don, we realised that these “demo tracks” were just the tip of the iceberg and in addition to the ones that people had heard, there were many more.

As our starting point, we picked the unbelievably dope “Slave Of New York” track to kick off our hunt for five EP cuts. When Don told us that Bobbito had the only tape of that song, we hit Bob up and he helped track it down for us. A couple of weeks later and we had the cut, direct from the original cassette, along with a CD of snippets of other unreleased tracks. Picking through them for our release was difficlut, but fun.
We decided on the final tracklisting – only to go back to Don a week later and ask if we could get “Colors Of Death” as an additional “bonus” track.

A six-track EP of dope unreleased Godfather Don material? Now that sounds like the perfect DWG project to us..

After the final tracklisting was decided and agreed on, we went through the process of designing, mastering, stickering sleeves and eventually pressing up the second of our vinyl projects. Hard work, but well worth it.
