VA – New York Renaissance (WEB) (2013) (320 kbps)
Forget your freshmen lists and cool it with the hottest MCs (well, unless you’re looking at SPIN’s picks) — Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg has dropped his The New York Renaissance mixtape and it’s jam-packed with bubbling East Coast talent. The terribly named but mightily talented Joey Bada$$ kicks things off with a Harry Fraud-produced ivory-tickler. The Brooklyn beatsmith sticks around for an Action Bronson track called “Compliments to the Chef” (fitting), and our hipster-bashing buddy Dyme-a-Duzin contributes his “New Brooklyn Remix” (plus “4get About It”). A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg drop by for a freestyle, as do Breaking Out stars Flatbush Zombies (they share a new song, too). The still underrated Homeboy Sandman brings his mellow brainy vibes, Smoke DZA brings the weeded rhymes, and Joey’s scene makes it back into the mix via Pro Era’s boom-bappy “Rosie at Rubber Tracks.” All told, it’s a strikingly diverse set showcasing just how many different types of voices are operating in the burg that birthed the art form (although there’s a noticeable lack of vogue-rap and women)
