Resin Dogs – More (CD) (2007) (FLAC + 320 kbps)

Resin Dogs have worked with overseas vocalists before, but they’re the most noticeable thing More has more of. There’s Abstract Rude from LA, performing both by himself and with the rest of his supercrew Haiku D’etat, Demolition Man and Yungun from the UK and Australia’s own N’FA and Hau, among others. Paired with Katalyst’s last album, this might just mark the beginning of a trend towards the global and away from the parochial in Aussie hip hop. It’s about time. The Dogs’ funky beats on A Destructive Circle serve as a launchpad for Ab Rude to take on authority figures and the man without coming off juvenile. Fine Mess gives Yungun a chance to get philosophical that unfortunately includes lyrical clunkers about how he’s trying to “spin myself a worldwide web and “force myself on like a Jedi Knight. The general air of deep and meaningful over the first half’s songs like the ragga jungle Peace & Love gives way to dirtier beats and subjects in the second half. Nasty and Sex Cells are both garage numbers about getting laid and Move Up’s about getting high, on good music, naturally. Then there’s a regrettable ten-minute instrumental jam that, while constructed from similar elements to the rest of the album live drums and keys and buzzing bass, wakka-wakka guitar drones off into nothing much. It’s one of only a couple of mistakes on an otherwise solid album that places Resin Dogs near the front of their field.
