Krazy Drayz – Showtime (WEB) (2012) (FLAC + 320 kbps)
Krazy Drayz (born Andre Weston ) attended Virgina State University where he majored in English. Removed from an active music scene in New York, he was free to develop his signature “iggedy sewa style.” He started making up gibberish words (anything ending in “-iggedy” was a favorite) that added loads of extra syllables to his lines, and wove plenty of pop-cultural references into the tongue-twisting lyrical gymnastics. Krazy Drayz caught his big break when he performed at a talent show judged by EPMD; though his group didn’t win, EPMD was impressed enough to offer them a deal, and the duo became part of the Hit Squad crew of protégés.
Signing to the East West label, Krazy Drayz and his group DAS EFX began work on their debut album, commuting between Virginia and New York and mailing tapes to EPMD (then touring the country) for guidance. Upon its release in 1992, Dead Serious caused an immediate sensation, and is still considered something of a landmark in hip-hop circles. The first single, the instantly memorable signature song “They Want EFX,” was a Top 40 pop hit and a Top Ten R&B hit, and helped push sales of Dead Serious past the platinum mark. Their follow-up album, 1993’s Straight Up Sewaside, which went gold, was a fan favorite as was Hold It Down which was released in 1995. After the break up of The Hit Squad in 95’, DAS EFX took a three-year absence from recording and mainly toured Europe. By the time they returned in 1998 with Generation EFX, the group was playing more to a devoted but narrower cult audience.
After years of recording songs on his own, in 2012 Krazy Drayz decided to take a break from DAS EFX and pursue his solo career. His first album entitled Showtime, is a return to his original “ iggedy sewa style” and is dedicated to his fans. With songs like Mic Check, Two TurnTables and Put Em Up, ShowTime is a throw back to the 90’s hip-hop with a current feel. Drayz also reached out to some of his peers from the golden era of hip-hop like Fredro Starr of Onyx, Tek n Steele and Sean Price to feature on the album. Filled with hot beats from a host of up coming hip-hop producers, ShowTime is sure to be one of the best albums of the year!!
