In the late ’80s and early ’90s, the success that MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark, and Gerardo enjoyed in pop and dance circles inspired many major labels to sign pop-rappers. While none of those artists had much credibility among hip-hop’s hardcore, their success in the pop market made the majors take notice. At A&M, one of 1991’s pop-rap signings was Triple M, who doesn’t have great rapping skills but occasionally comes up with some catchy grooves on this self-titled debut album. It is pointless to judge Triple M by hardcore rap standards because that isn’t what he’s going for; however, it is fair to compare him to other pop-rappers and explain what his flaws are. If one measures Triple M by Hammer’s standards, they won’t find this album terribly impressive. Hammer, regardless of what people may say, definitely has strong rapping skills — he might not be one’s cup of tea for purists who only like hardcore rap, but no one can honestly claim that Hammer can’t rap. Triple M, however, wouldn’t last long in a microphone battle with Hammer (if pop-rappers were into mic battles). His rapping skills are limited, which is something one could forgive if this album had a lot of memorable grooves. But most of the material is pedestrian, although Triple M does, on occasion, come up with something memorable; “Deep Game” and “Prisoner of Passion” are among the CD’s catchier tracks. Triple M turned out to be a one-album wonder — he never recorded a second album, and this disc is only a small footnote in the history of pop-rap.
