Son Of Eve – Dollar Shots (CD) (1998) (FLAC + 320 kbps)
The hip-hop and rock trio Son of Eve dropped their one and only major-label full-length release, Dollar Shots, for A&M imprint Dv8 Records in 1998. Due to A&M’s eminent disposal at the hands of new parent company Universal, the timing was particularly bad for new Polygram artists like Son of Eve and others who seemed to have simply disappeared shortly after the Polygram/Universal merger. All matters of corporate history aside, Son of Eve made an interesting brand of hip-hop that is fully realized and demonstrated on Dollar Shots. Leading the attack are MCs Gus and Finster Baby Jones, two rappers with distinctive yet somewhat similar deliveries vaguely reminiscent of Cypress Hill’s B-Real in chill-out mode. Along with keyboard and turntablist D. Smoove, Jones and Gus add depth to their mixes by actually performing many of their own musical tracks. Each member of the group contributes keyboard performances, as Gus handles the guitars and Jones lays down the drum tracks. Laid-back and earnest, Dollar Shots packs a sinister, cool, pop punch that rock fans as well as hip-hop listeners should enjoy.
