The Misled Children, “disciples” of the “mysterious” Clutchy Hopkins, meet up with a real musical legend in Odean Pope, whose timeless tenor has been heard alongside jazz greats like Max Roach and the late Art Blakey for decades. Pope’s outstanding arrangements and sax blowin’ add a new twist to the saga of these guys’ dusty downtempo styles; the extra punch is especially evident on joints like “Dadadun” and “Odean Hopkins.” Also don’t miss the shamanic, shambling “Uno,” the off-kilter “Grimey,” and straight-up jazzy “Foregone.” Definitely a serendipitous marriage here – forget the convoluted backstory and just give this one a spin.
