One of the East Coast’s most distinctive underground MC/producers, J-Zone has succeeded in making a voice for himself with his production style–one that utilizes a bevy of obscure loops and odd vocal samples. TO LOVE A HOOKER, the original soundtrack to an imaginary film, is Zone’s first attempt at a full-blown concept album. Taking a break from the mic and focusing his attention on auditory ambience, J-Zone fleshes out the non-existent film’s plot over 28 tracks of instrumentals and skits (entitled “film clips”). The end result is a balance of 1970’s blaxploitation and sleazy cyber-funk, humorously seasoned with the usual dose of well-placed film and TV samples.
