About a year after the 1987 shooting death of Boogie Down Productions’ producer/DJ Scott La Rock, his surviving partner KRS-One issued Man & His Music, a limited-edition collection of remixes dedicated to the memory of his departed partner. Though BDP had only issued their brilliant debut Criminal Minded just five months before La Rock’s murder, Man & His Music mines their slight catalog of early songs to produce 15 remixes that range from rudimentary early hip-hop minimalism to oddball Prince-sampling sound collages. The results aren’t particularly strong overall, but the album still manages to capture some of the pioneering spirit of New York hip-hop in its early development.
