Popularized by Ice-T, N.W.A., and Eazy-E in the late ’80s, gangsta rap was at first a riveting depiction of the horrors of ghetto life. But the music industry — true to form — reduced it to a shallow formula and milked it for all it was worth. Countless clone artists, one just as faceless as the next, flooded the market in the early ’90s. One of them was Gangsta Pat, who hails from Memphis but sounds like he could be from Compton, CA, or South Central L.A. Offering very little originality, #1 Suspect is a perfect example of the unimaginative nature of so much of the gangsta rap that labels were quick to record at the time. The rap ballad “Gangster’s Need Love 2” is a fairly entertaining bit of dark humor, but tracks like “Legion of Doom,” “Project Pimps,” and “Gangster Shit” are cliché-ridden and painfully generic. Hip-hop aficionados should be sure to avoid this CD.
